Celebrate National Pollinator Week!

National Pollinator Week is June 22-28. Take this opportunity to learn more about these valuable creatures and what you can do to support them.

· Make your own bee bundle at the bee bundling workshop led by ASNV.

· Participate in the native plant swap organized by Arlingtonions for a Clean Environment.

· Get an idea of what plants you should use, at the Long Branch Nature Center’s traveling plant display.

· Maybe even identify some of the pollinators that show up for the event.

· Numerous handouts will be available. Everything is free; no registration is required.

The Nature of Meadowood

Join an experienced naturalist to discover the special diversity of wildlife and natural habitats within the Bureau of Land Management's Meadowood Recreation Area. Trips are limited to 10. Call BLM's Jinx Fox, 703-928-0186, for reservations.

Getting there: Take I-95 south to Lorton exit 163. Turn left on Lorton Road, right on Rt. 1, and left on Gunston Road. About a mile past the elementary school you will see Meadowood's horse pastures and signs on the right. Enter through the iron gateway, drive straight ahead, and park by the stables.

Twin Branches Nature Trail, Reston

Longtime ASNV bird walk leaders Carol and Jay Hadlock will guide us along this stream valley.

Getting there: From the intersection of the Dulles Toll Road and Reston Parkway, drive south on Reston Parkway and turn left onto Sunrise Valley Drive. Go east on Sunrise Valley for about 2 miles, turn right onto South Lake Drive and then left onto Twin Branches Road. Continue to the intersection of Glade Drive and Twin Branches, where we will begin our walk.

Dragonflies at Huntley Meadows

PJ Dunn will give a short introductory presentation in the Visitors’ Center and then lead our search for these acrobatic insects.

Getting there: Take Rt. 1 south from the Beltway for about 3 miles, turn left onto Lockheed Blvd., and continue to the park entrance. Meet at the Visitors’ Center.

Huntley Meadows Hike and Bike Trail

Explore the “other” Huntley Meadows. Nolan Britt will be looking for Blue Grosbeaks, Yellow-breasted Chats, and Scarlet Tanagers. Bring bug spray for deer flies.

Getting there: Meet at the King’s Highway South entrance to the park, at the junction of Telegraph Rd. and King’s Highway.

Lara Bainbridge will lead us. We will bird at the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship (BRCES) and then repair to the cool stone tasting room at Breaux Vineyard at 11:00 AM. There will be a charge for the wine tasting . Lara needs to let Breaux know how many of us to expect, so be sure to RSVP to her at: lets_hoot@hotmail.com. Rain date: August 31.

Getting there: From Leesburg, go west on Rt. 7, turn right onto Rt. 9, and continue to Rt. 671/Harpers Ferry Rd. Turn right onto Rt. 671 and go about six miles to the BRCES entrance on the left, just past the Neersville Fire Station.

Laurel Hill Tree Walk

Harry Glasgow will lead a walk focusing on trees -- which may help some of us break the habit of saying, “...in that big tree over there with the green leaves.”

Getting there: The entrance to Laurel Hill is off Lorton Road and is clearly marked. We will meet in the parking lot at the Giles Run entrance across from the old prison.
